The eleventh edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) has stumbled into what many are calling the most chaotic and controversial start in the tournament’s history. Marketed as a “New Era” of Pakistan’s premier T20 competition, PSL 2026 has instead been marred by logistical failures, integrity concerns, and off-field scandals that have overshadowed the cricket itself.
Naseem Shah’s “Queen at Lord’s” row
The most explosive controversy erupted when Rawalpindi Pindiz pacer Naseem Shah allegedly posted a remark questioning the VIP treatment given to Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz during the opening ceremony. The post — “Why is she being treated like the queen at Lord’s?” — was deleted within minutes, with Naseem claiming his account was hacked. The PCB, unconvinced, issued him a show-cause notice for breaching central contract rules and media policy. The incident struck a nerve at a time when fans are barred from stadiums while dignitaries enjoy full protocol.
Overseas exodus to IPL
Before the first ball was bowled, PSL’s credibility took a hit as several overseas stars withdrew to join the Indian Premier League (IPL) as injury replacements. This scheduling clash left franchises scrambling to fill rosters, reinforcing perceptions of PSL as a “secondary league” in global cricket.
The “Pink Ball” farce
In a bizarre twist, the opening match between Lahore Qalandars and debutants Hyderabad Kingsmen saw the white ball turn pink. The maroon dye from Hyderabad’s jerseys rubbed off whenever fielders polished the ball, leaving players — including captain Marnus Labuschagne — baffled. The incident raised serious questions about the quality control of official PSL merchandise.
Ghost stadiums and VIP priority
Despite promises of a “New Era,” PSL 2026 has been played in empty stadiums due to regional crises and fuel shortages, with matches held behind closed doors. Fans have voiced frustration at the lack of branding and atmosphere, describing venues as resembling practice matches. Meanwhile, VIPs and dignitaries continue to attend under heavy security, sparking criticism of unequal access policies.
Ball-tampering and security breaches
Integrity concerns have also surfaced. During the Lahore Qalandars vs Karachi Kings clash, umpires penalized Lahore after determining the ball had been deliberately altered, awarding Karachi five penalty runs. Star batter Fakhar Zaman now faces a Level 3 disciplinary charge. Separately, reports alleged that Shaheen Shah Afridi and Sikandar Raza violated hotel security protocols by allowing unauthorized visitors into the team hotel, prompting further PCB scrutiny.
A tournament under siege
Taken together — the player discipline issues, technical mishaps, empty stadiums, overseas withdrawals, and VIP controversies — PSL 2026 has endured a start unlike any other in its 11-year history. What was meant to symbolize progress has instead highlighted the league’s vulnerabilities, leaving organizers scrambling to restore credibility and fans questioning whether this is indeed the most controversial PSL start ever.
