Qalandars poised for PSL with a legacy of triumphs, talent development
By our correspondent
As the anticipation builds for the ninth edition of the HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL), Lahore Qalandars emerges as a powerhouse, not just for their back-to-back championship victories but also for their unwavering commitment to nurturing local talent through innovative initiatives.
Since the inception of HBL PSL in 2016, Lahore Qalandars has transformed into a formidable force, captivating cricket enthusiasts with their vibrant team dynamics and a journey marked by perseverance and excellence. The team’s commitment to developing local talent has been a defining characteristic, setting them apart as more than just a cricket team.
Despite facing initial challenges and inconsistent performances in the early seasons, Lahore Qalandars remained resolute in their vision. COO and team manager Sameen Rana reflected on the challenging early years, stating, “First four years were very challenging with lots of disappointment and criticism, but it was important for us to learn from those experiences, from our mistakes, and it helped us improve in later stages of the league, where we won back-to-back titles.”
Under the ownership of Sameen Rana and his brother Atif Rana, who serves as the CEO, Lahore Qalandars’ dedication to talent development extended from the North to South of Pakistan. The globally acclaimed Player Development Program (PDP) played a pivotal role in identifying and nurturing young cricketing talent, offering comprehensive programs and opportunities at international venues.
“The PDP was my brother Atif [Rana]’s vision, he wanted to engage the youth with the franchise,” Sameen remarked. “He was very passionate about developing talent, and the project was very close to his heart, and he is the one who deserves the credit for the success of PDP.”
The turning point came in the COVID-affected 2020 season when Lahore Qalandars, under Sohail Akhtar’s leadership, reached the HBL PSL final for the first time. The momentum carried into the 2022 edition, where, under new captain Shaheen Shah Afridi, Lahore Qalandars clinched their maiden HBL PSL title. In 2023, they made history by successfully defending their title, securing their second trophy with a victory over Multan Sultans.
As the team prepares for the upcoming season, the absence of lead spinner Rashid Khan due to injury poses a challenge. Nevertheless, Lahore Qalandars remain confident with a balanced squad and a belief that they are capable of defending the title and making history once again.
“I am very hopeful from this squad, which is very much balanced,” said Sameen. “I am confident that Qalandars are very much capable of defending the title and creating history.”
As Lahore Qalandars gears up for the ninth edition, their legacy of triumphs and commitment to talent development solidify their status as a force to be reckoned with in the HBL PSL, embodying the essence of cricketing passion and determination.
