(Bud) grafting.
What is Grafting?
Grafting is a gardening trick where you join parts of two different plants so they grow as one. Think of it as plant surgery!
You take a piece of a branch or a bud (called the Scion) from one plant.
You attach it to the stem or roots (called the Stock) of another plant.
The goal is to fuse the tissues of both plants so they can grow together and form a single, new plant.
Why Do Gardeners Graft?
To Grow More Plants: It’s an easy way to multiply plants, especially fruit trees that don’t grow well or keep their traits when grown from a seed.
To Keep Good Traits: It helps save and extend the life of trees with great qualities, like a specific type of high-quality fruit.
To Fight Disease: For vegetable plants, grafting can help the plant resist diseases and pests that live in the soil.
To Mix Plants: You can use it to make a single plant that grows two different kinds of fruit, such as different varieties of apples.
The Two Main Parts
Scion (Top Part): This is the piece of stem or bud that is added on top. It gives the new plant its leaves, flowers, and fruit.
Stock (Bottom Part): This is the root or base plant that the scion is attached to. It provides the roots and gets water and nutrients from the soil.
Common Techniques
There are several methods for grafting, including Wedge grafting, Whip grafting, Cleft grafting, and Bud grafting. These techniques are ways of carefully cutting and joining the two plant parts so they heal and grow together healthily.
