Alam clinches Defence Raya Golf Championship title in style

Special Correspondent

Muhammad Alam of Lahore Garrison Golf Club produced a stunning display of skill, consistency, and composure to capture the 3rd Defence Raya Open Golf Championship title, held at the scenic Defence Raya Golf & Country Club in Lahore. The championship, spread over three action-packed days, saw Pakistan’s top professionals and senior professionals battle for glory, but none could match Alam’s clinical precision and temperament under pressure.

Alam carded brilliant rounds of 72, 69, and 70 for a total aggregate of 211, finishing five under par and securing a commanding victory. His all-round performance earned him the championship title along with a handsome cash prize of Rs 791,000.

The final day of the event showcased Alam’s remarkable ability to stay composed and adapt to the demanding layout of the Defence Raya course — one that tested accuracy, nerve, and course management at every turn. His consistent ball striking and flawless putting kept him ahead of the field, proving that experience and calmness remain key ingredients in championship golf.

Trailing Alam in the standings was Matloob Ahmed, also from Lahore Garrison Golf Club, who put up a spirited fight with rounds of 70 and 71, finishing second with a gross score of 141 after two rounds. Muhammad Munir of Rawalpindi, a seasoned professional and former national champion, along with Mudassir Iqbal of Karachi and Muhammad Shehzad of Islamabad Golf Club, rounded off the top contenders — all performing admirably but unable to surpass Alam’s dominance.

Early rounds: Matloob shines, Alam finds momentum

The championship teed off with competitive energy as Matloob Ahmed set the pace on Day 1, producing a steady round that briefly placed him atop the leaderboard. Muhammad Waqas also impressed in the Junior Professionals and Senior Professionals segment, posting a gross score of 75 on the challenging course. Close behind him were Muhammad Tariq of Islamabad with a 71, and Rehan Babar of Lahore Garrison, both showing fine form.

However, it was Alam’s steady climb across the second round — with impressive back-to-back scores of 69 and 70 — that shifted the momentum in his favor. He went into the final day with a slender lead and then maintained his composure brilliantly to close out the championship in style.

Senior professionals: Naseer claims top spot

In the Senior Professionals category, Muhammad Naseer of Defence Raya Golf Club leveraged his local experience to clinch the senior title. Playing on his home course, Naseer displayed precision and patience throughout, fending off competition from Khalid Mehmood, who finished second with a gross score of 76, and Muhammad Akram of Lahore Gymkhana, who placed third after a consistent showing.

A showcase of Pakistan’s golfing depth

The 3rd Defence Raya Open Golf Championship not only highlighted the country’s top golfing talent but also underscored the growing competitiveness of Pakistan’s professional golf circuit. The scenic Defence Raya course — known for its undulating fairways, deceptive greens, and strategic bunkering — provided a true test of skill and temperament.

Speaking after his victory, Alam credited his disciplined approach and course familiarity for his success:

“The course demanded patience and smart shot selection. I tried to stay within my game plan, stay calm, and capitalize on scoring opportunities. Winning here among such strong competitors means a lot,” said Alam.

Organizers and federation praise players’ effort

The Pakistan Golf Federation (PGF) and Defence Raya management lauded the players’ commitment and professionalism, noting that the event continues to play a vital role in promoting golf in Pakistan. The championship attracted players from top clubs including Lahore Garrison, Karachi, Islamabad, and Rawalpindi, making it one of the most competitive tournaments on the domestic circuit.

As the 2025–26 golf season gains momentum, the Defence Raya Open Golf Championship once again affirmed its status as a premier event — blending competition, camaraderie, and class in equal measure.

With this win, Muhammad Alam cements his place among Pakistan’s elite golfers, while his commanding performance sets the tone for upcoming national events on the Pakistan Golf Federation calendar.
