Pakistan’s senior and veteran tennis players returned from Thailand with far more than medals and trophies. Their participation in the two legs of the ITF World Masters Tour MT200 Tournament in Khao Lak became a compelling statement about resilience, sustained excellence and the untapped potential of senior tennis in the country. Competing against seasoned professionals from Europe, Asia, Oceania and North America, the Bank of Punjab–sponsored contingent delivered one of Pakistan’s most successful international senior campaigns in recent years.

A challenging start, a strong response

The opening day of the first leg on December 6 presented early challenges. Matches were played in punishing heat on hard courts, testing fitness as much as skill. Initial results were mixed: Rashid Ahmed Malik began confidently with a straight-sets victory in the 60+ category, while Waqar Nisar and Furqan Uddin Khan faced tough defeats against German and Swiss opponents.

However, those early setbacks did not define the tour. Instead, they became a turning point. Pakistan’s players adjusted tactically, improved match rhythm, and displayed mental toughness — qualities that would define the remainder of the tournament.

Khurram Imtiaz: The flag-bearer of the campaign

The standout performer across both legs was undoubtedly Khurram Imtiaz. His upset victory over the second seed from Switzerland in the 55+ category, powered by a barrage of aces and fearless baseline play, immediately placed Pakistan in the spotlight. Khurram’s aggressive style, physical conditioning and calm under pressure were consistent features throughout the tour.

His journey culminated in a singles title in the 55+ category — his second ITF crown — along with a doubles title alongside Furqan Uddin Khan. Winning both singles and doubles at an MT200 event is no small achievement and underlined his status as one of Pakistan’s most accomplished senior players on the international circuit.

Rashid Malik: Class is permanent

Former Davis Cup stalwart Rashid Ahmed Malik once again proved why he remains a respected name on the ITF Masters Tour. His commanding run in the 60+ category, capped by a dominant final win over Switzerland’s Hannes Aeberhard, highlighted the value of experience, tactical awareness and discipline.

Malik’s ability to control rallies, vary pace and use his serve intelligently allowed him to thrive even in physically demanding conditions. His strong performances across both legs, including victories against opponents from Japan and Singapore, reinforced Pakistan’s credibility in senior singles competition.

Waqar Nisar: Fighting spirit at 70+

Competing in the 70+ category, Waqar Nisar emerged as a symbol of endurance and competitive grit. After an early loss, he bounced back emphatically with dominant round-robin wins and eventually finished runner-up in the singles event.

His marathon encounters — some lasting over two hours — reflected not only fitness but tactical intelligence. Waqar’s willingness to adapt his game through drop shots, depth control and point construction made him a difficult opponent even against higher-ranked players.

Doubles: Progress with room to grow

Pakistan’s doubles results offered both encouragement and learning opportunities. The title-winning run of Khurram Imtiaz and Furqan Uddin Khan in the 55+ category showcased sharp net play, chemistry and composure. Their semifinal revenge win over a German pair demonstrated adaptability and confidence.

At the same time, losses in other doubles categories revealed areas that need focused attention — particularly structured doubles preparation, match-specific pairings and more exposure against elite international combinations.

Positives from the Tour

Several positives emerged clearly from Pakistan’s Khao Lak campaign:

  • Mental resilience: Players rebounded strongly from early defeats.
  • Physical preparation: Competing effectively in extreme heat showed improved conditioning.
  • Technical balance: Pakistan’s players displayed strong serves, baseline consistency and tactical awareness.
  • International credibility: Four titles and multiple finals placed Pakistan among the top-performing nations at the event.
  • Team culture: Strong camaraderie and mutual support were evident throughout the tour.

The role of sponsorship and support

The impact of The Bank of Punjab’s sponsorship cannot be overstated. International senior tennis requires consistent travel, preparation and confidence — all of which are impossible without institutional backing. The players’ public appreciation for BOP leadership reflects how crucial sustained sponsorship is to maintaining Pakistan’s presence on the global Masters circuit.

Suggestions for future growth

While the results were highly encouraging, the tour also offered valuable lessons:

  1. Regular international exposure
Senior players should be supported to play multiple ITF events annually to maintain ranking momentum and match sharpness.
  2. Structured doubles training
Dedicated doubles camps and pair continuity can turn semifinal losses into titles.
  3. Sports science integration
Recovery, hydration and injury prevention must be prioritized, especially in hot climates.
  4. Younger seniors pathway
Players transitioning into 35+ and 40+ categories should be identified early and integrated into international competition.
  5. Domestic senior circuit strengthening
A stronger local Masters calendar will widen the talent pool and prepare players for international demands.

More than medals

Pakistan’s performance at the ITF Masters MT200 Tournaments in Khao Lak was not just a medal haul — it was a reaffirmation that excellence in sport does not end with age. The campaign showcased skill, resilience and pride, proving that with the right support, senior athletes can continue to represent the country with distinction.

If these performances are built upon with strategic planning and sustained backing, Pakistan’s senior tennis can evolve from occasional success to consistent international relevance — inspiring not just the next generation of players, but the entire sporting community.
